In his speech to the Media Reform Conference attendees, Bill Moyers said that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was a "monstrous assault on democracy, with malignant consequences for journalism" which created what he called "a plantation mentality." "The iron grip on lawmakers and regulators" by the mega media companies was now complete.
Moyers had started his talk in Memphis at the Media Reform Conference with a joke by Benjamin Franklin:
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner."
"Liberty," he said, "is a well-armed lamb, contesting the vote."
With that he welcomed the media activists who were well armed he said with three essential things; " with passion for democracy, readiness for action, and courage for the next round in the fight for a free and independent press in America. " He added, " I salute the conviction that brought you here. I cherish the spirit that fills this hall, and the camaraderie that we share here."
